The Department of Physics was established and started its activity from 2008. The department has rich tradition of teaching and research. Currently, we offer a two-year M.Sc. program in physics, and a Ph.D. program in various fore-front research areas of experimental and theoretical physics. The department introduced four-year B. Tech. program in Engineering Physics from 2021 and five year dual degree B.Tech. in Engineering Physics, IIT Patna - MBA (IIM, Bodh Gaya) from AY 2024-25 onwards. We welcome the young physics enthusiasts to join the B. Tech program designed to provide an in-depth exposure in basic and applied physics areas. The salient features of the B. Tech. in Engineering Physics program include a solid grounding in core areas, a sound training in physics, a rich variety of electives, and an exposure to frontier technologies. Some of the key courses in applied areas include Applied Optics and Photonics, Cryogenic Engineering, Laser Physics, Computer Aided Physics, Photovoltaics and Fuel Cell Technology, Physics of Nanomaterials, Medical Physics, Particle Physics, Quantum Optics, Cosmology, High Energy Physics. Esteemed faculty members of the department are actively involved in research and development in challenging areas of both theory and experiment. Currently, the main research emphasis of the department comprises Condensed Matter Physics, Energy, Quantum Physics, Quantum Technology, Optics & Photonics, Biophysics, Atomic & Molecular Physics, High-Energy Physics and Cosmology. The department has state of the art research facilities to support the academic programs and research. Physics department has been arranging regular lectures by the students, faculty members, and external visitors, arranging outreach activities, workshops, conferences, and various other academic, sports, and cultural events etc. The students are actively involved in various academic activities under the physics society and Optica-IIT Patna Student Chapter. The teaching labs in our curriculum gives students an exposure to state of the art, technology and cutting-edge research undertaken in the department. The department focuses to nurture young engineers with a strong foundation in science and engineering for producing highly skilled engineers and scientists. The students are encouraged for developing problem-solving skills and independent thinking through a research-oriented curriculum to conduct research or contribute to technology development projects, either individually or as a team leader. This develops highly skilled engineers who can contribute to the solution of technical and engineering problems that are based on broad principles of physics. The primary focus of our teaching approach is to equip our students to provide career opportunities in rapidly-advancing scientific and technical areas, R&D establishments, Modern cutting edge technologies, higher degree, Academia/Industry and etc .
Vision
To focus on global excellence and local relevance, produce the next generation of thinkers , brilliant theorists and experimentalists and entrepreneurs ,institution builders etc.
