AI-NLP-ML Group, Department of CSE, IIT Patna


The Artificial Intelligence-Natural Language Processing-Machine Learning (AI-NLP-ML) Group at Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Patna has started its official journey in June, 2015. The group is dedicated to explore the frontiers of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing under the able guidance of Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya. The group also consists of other two faculty members, Dr. Asif Ekbal and Dr. Sriparna Saha, and around 45 members including Research scholars, Research engineers, Lexicographers, B.Tech & M.Tech students. Several industry sponsored projects are currently being undertaken.

Elsevier, the renowned scientific literature publishing company has set up the Elsevier Centre of Excellence for Natural Language Processing to conduct research and development in some of the novel areas of AI, NLP and ML.
Another company, ezDI has set up the Sushrut-eZDI Research Lab on Health Informatics, which is dedicated towards developing products for health care and contribute to research having significant outcomes.

Moments of Pride

Tirthankar Ghosal, a senior PhD scholar from our group, was a core member of the Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) committee of NAACL 2019. He was responsible for Financial Access (merit-wise grant allocation) to the D&I applicants with other committee members.

Tirthankar Ghosal, a senior PhD scholar from our group, was awarded the Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR) 2018 award for popular science writing on "Artificial Intelligence in Peer Review" by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.

Tirthankar Ghosal, a PhD Scholar of our group has been selected as a Visiting Research Scholar at the prestigious Oak Ridge National Laboratory under Department of Energy (DoE), US Federal Government (March-August, 2019).

Tirthankar Ghosal, a PhD Scholar of our group was selected to present his research on Novelty Detection at IRISS 2019 (top 15 CS PhD), ACM India Annual Event held at Kochi, India from February 6-8, 2019.

Our AI-NLP-ML group is ranked 9th in Asia as per the latest CS Ranking: Computer Science.

Dr. Sriparna Saha has been selected for Indo-U.S. Fellowship for Women in STEMM (WISTEMM) ​Program 2018.

Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya conferred the IIT Kharagpur Distinguished Alumnus Award 2018 during the 64th Annual Convocation of IIT Kharagpur held on July 20th 2018.

Tirthankar Ghosal, a PhD Scholar of our group, was invited as a speaker in FORCE11 2018 conference to present on AI in scholarly communications held at McGill University, Montreal from October 10-11, 2018 with full sponsorship awarded by CrossRef.

Dr. Sriparna Saha received Visvesvaraya Young Faculty Research Fellowship Award from MeiTY, Govt. of India.

Dr. Asif Ekbal is chairing in the Question-Answering Track of NAACL-2019, a top-tier conference of Natural Language Processing.

Dr. Asif Ekbal is in the Senior Program Committee of IJCAI-2019, a top-tier conference of Artificial Intellegence.

Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya, Director, IIT Patna is listed among the Top 10 Machine Learning Researchers In India.

Dr. Sriparna Saha has been awarded the SERB EARLY CAREER RESEARCH AWARD 2018.

Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya, Director, IIT Patna to Head Committee for Standardisation in Artificial Intelligence, set up by Bureau of Indian Standards under Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

The research on Computational Sarcasm (by Pushpak Sir and team) has been reported in The Times, London Edition on 19th September, 2017.

"Machine Translation Book", written by Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya is one of the prominent books in Machine Translation. It turns up as the second on the "Books" list across the top results.

Dr. Sriparna Saha has been chosen as Associate Editor of ACM Transaction on Asian Low Resource Language Information Processing.

Dr. Asif Ekbal has been awarded the prestigious JSPS Fellowship from the Japan Government for conducting research in Kyoto Universit.
