Rural Technology Development Club

An Initiative by students of IIT Patna to identify the problems prevailing in the rural areas and innovate using latest technology to develop devices and address these problems.

Mission

Rural Technology Development Club aims to identify the problems prevailing in the rural areas and work to develop technologies and devices to address them. These developments create a culture that promotes the application of theoretical knowledge to the practical obstacles. We work to foster an environment which promotes the implementation of scientific ideas into the routine activities and develop technologies to scale up the efficiency of the traditional manufacturing processes followed in rural areas.

Objective

To identify the problems of rural areas and solve them by application of advanced engineering sciences.
To upgrade the existing technical models, correct out the defects and come up with modified designs catering to user’s requirement.
To work on the relevant problems to bridge the gap between the needs and resources of a specific region.
To incorporate scientific approach into daily lives of people.

Love what you do, and you'll do it well

Adhyayan Utsav

A week long student festival is conducted by Rural Technology Development Club for school students in the government funded schools located of Bihta and Dilawarpur region. This festival, entirely funded by UBA Cell (IIT Patna) , is conducted every year in the month of March.

  • Wheat Crop Cutting Quadricycle Based Model

PROBLEM : The wheat and paddy crops were manually reaped with the help of Scythe which is a slow process, involving extensive labour in an uncomfortable posture.

SOLUTION : A cutting mechanism is installed on quadricycle. Horizontal feed and cutting operation both will be simultaneously performed by pedal force.

DESIGN STATUS: The design is completed and applied for patent(Indian design application no. 261817 , in the name of Raju Gupta, Rishabh, Avinash and Harnav).

  • Handle Operated Soil And Garbage Collector

PROBLEM : Harmful and Less efficient way of collection and transportation of waste and construction material.

SOLUTION : To make a 2 in 1 machine that can collect and transport without physical contact.

DESIGN STATUS: The design is completed and applied for patent (Indian design application no. 272013, in the name of (1) Raju Gupta, (2) Mayank Tiwari, (3) Avinash Kumar, (4) K. N. P. Raja Sekhar, (5) Ravindra kumar Meena & (6) Indian Institute of Technology title:Handle operated garbage & soil collector).

  • Automatic Irrigation System

PROBLEM : Farmer has to travel miles from his home just to switch on/off the water supply in the farms. Also there is uncertainty about the presence of electricity. This task becomes very difficult especially during night time.

SOLUTION : Designing a system by which a farmer can just send SMS to regulate the water supply. It reduces the efforts as well as helps to control the adequate water supply in the farms.

DESIGN STATUS: Phase 1: GSM communication with user and its control by master microcontroller. Call->Hang->Send SMS->Receive SMS->Work accordingly. Phase 2: Wireless communication between two microcontrollers. Phase 3: Gathering data from all nodes if they are in the direct range of master MCU.The design is completed and applied for patent (Indian design application no. 272013, in the name of (1) Raju Gupta, (2) Mayank Tiwari, (3) Avinash Kumar, (4) K. N. P. Raja Sekhar, (5) Ravindra kumar Meena & (6) Indian Institute of Technology title:Handle operated garbage & soil collector). Phase 4: To design WSN network for mini MCU which are not in range with master MCU. The master MCU has to take help of other MCU for noting the data. This is the most important phase. Phase 5: Enable GPRS of SIM300 and store the data on Cloud for monitoring purpose.

  • Soil Quality Testing Device

PROBLEM : The soil conditions play a very important role in the crop production. Excessive amounts of fertilizers and chemicals not only degrade the crop production but they also cause environmental problems and more investment from the farmers. The use of fertilizers should be such that it should not deteriorate the soil condition and it should be just sufficient for the growth of the crops.

SOLUTION : The aim of this project is to create a low cost user friendly device that would test the quality of the soil(especially pH and NPK content) in rural areas. The device should be easy to use and maintained by the farmers and hence should require low maintenance .The group working on this project aims to create a device using arduino and light sensitive resistors, that would detect the color variations in the pH strips and NPK(Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium) strips and accordingly provide a value corresponding to pH and NPK content of the soil.

STATUS: The group has prepared a test model that is presently in the laboratory stage to test the pH. Currently the group is working on optimizing the design of the pH sensor and on applying this technique for measuring NPK content

To target the technical problems of the rural areas and provide solutions for the same.
